Perpignan is a food and wine lover’s paradise.
Everyone from the hearty amateur to the most demanding connoisseur
will find something to please their palate and pocketbook. There
are more than one hundred excellent restaurants and brasseries
in and around the town, all within a 5 minute drive or 10-15
minute walk from La Tour Apollinaire. Over several years we have
personally dined very well in almost all of these establishments,
and recommend several in particular.
The cuisine of Perpignan and the region reflects its historical
role as a meeting place of France, Spain and Catalonia, along
with an increasingly international dimension in the past decade.
The food here rates alongside some of the best one can experience
in London, Barcelona or Paris, without the expensive price tags
and fussy waiters one has to deal with in larger cities. It is
always fresh and locally produced, and served with warm Catalan
charm.
The selection of local Roussillon wines is also extremely
good value for money, as local vineyards produce an ever greater
variety of designer and blended wines with subtle, world-class
bouquets and flavours.
The local vineyards (two-thirds of French wine is grown in
the Languedoc-Roussillon), are producing delightfully individual
boutique style wines, at very reasonable prices, evoking some
of the best “New World” wines with local cultivars.
