lies in the Pyrenees between 75 and 90 minutes drive from
Chateau La Tour Apollinaire- simply turn left out of our gates
and head toward Prades, 30 minutes away along a superb double
carriageway. At the roundabout before the entrance to Prades,
follow the signs to Andorra and then the signs to Font Romeu.
You will climb up a breathtaking mountain pass for approximately
45 minutes before hitting the plateau at the base of which the
Font Romeu resort begins.
Font-Romeu is one of several high mountain
resorts close to the Chateau with an exceptionally sunny climate
and low humidity.
In winter the resort has a huge ski area (40 ski runs at an altitude
of 1600-2213 metres totalling 52 km of runs) and is home to the
pre-Olympic city, a sports training centre built by the French
Government to prepare French athletes for the high-altitude Mexico
Olympic Games. Today, Font-Romeu's Olympic-standard facilities
mean it can cater for sportsmen and women of the highest abilities.
Downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and hiking, dog
sledging and snow boarding are all available during the winter
months (from December to May).
Between May and December, Font Romeu is
a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding mountains. There
are also many enjoyable
walks through the village, which hosts dozens of restaurants,
fine tea and coffee shops, creperies and interesting architecture.
Gliding excursions also take place from nearby small airfields,
and are well worth the visit. You can also reach Font Romeu by
taking the Petit Train Jaune ('The Little Yellow Train'),
described in accompanying pages. It is a short taxi ride from
the station to the centre of Font Romeu if you have baggage,
alternatively you can walk up the road if you are travelling
light.
As well as having a great location,
Font-Romeu is the world's
leading centre for the treatment of chronic respiratory disease,
especially childhood asthma. The resort has all the medical expertise
necessary to treat respiratory problems, and maintains a continuous
educational programme with nationally qualified teachers. See
